A great way to increase the value of your home, is by installing new carpeting. Naturally, before you begin its a really good idea to do some research and get a better understanding of the various aspects that effect carpet installation cost. This way you will be better informed when it comes time to purchase your new carpet and you could possibly save hundreds of dollars.

There are two major factors to consider when determining carpet installation cost. Both the type of carpet / manufacturer and the retailer / installer you choose fin order to get the job done and get your new carpet installed.

Carpet Installation Cost

When it comes to having new carpeting installed there are two main options. Having the carpet you purchased installed by the retailer you purchased it from, or finding your own contractor for the installation and paying him strictly for the labour required to install the carpet.

Using a contractor is usually more cost effective since carpet retailers generally charge a large markup on installation.

When choosing a contractor for your carpet installation, its a good idea that you negotiate carpet installation cost up front and agree to a fixed amount. This way, you can avoid any surprises when the job is finished.

Carpet installation includes additional costs you might not be aware of. For example, the previous flooring or carpeting must be removed so factor in some additional labour cost for that. Sometimes the contractors don’t charge any extra to remove the previous flooring. But if they do, you can remove the flooring / carpeting yourself to save on installation cost. There is another carpet installation cost which potential customers are often unaware of. There is a foam padding layer that is applied underneath the carpeting which lies between the carpet and the floor. Make sure you remember to included padding when determining your carpet installation cost.

These are some typical Carpet Installation Cost figures: (please note costs may vary depending on what part of the country you live in and how large of a city you live in)

  • Removal of pervious flooring – $0.50 per square yard
  • Installation of foam padding – $0.50 per square yard
  • Carpet installation cost – $3.50 – $6.00 per square yard

With this knowledge your ready to find your local carpet installation contractor and have them take the necessary measurements required to get the job done. Once you have the measurements you need, you will be ready to go to some local retailers and pick out a carpet that suits your style!

Nylon

Nylon has been the most popular carpeting choice for decades. Nylon carpet features the best durability of any fibre available and is one of the most affordable options around. Nylon was invented by the DuPont company in the 1930′s, however the nylon used in today’s carpets is between 4th and 6thgeneration nylon. 6th generation nylon carpets include brands such as: XtraLife, StainMaster, Tactesse, Solutia Wear-Dated, Durasoft, Anso CrushResister, Caress and Shaw EverTouch. 6th generation fibres are designed to be more resilient to stains, abrasion and damage. Carpets made with this advanced nylon are generally more expensive. They are suitable for use throughout the home and are a top choice if you are highly concerned about stains.

Olefin / Polypropylene

Olefin was designed to be stain resistant, to prevent damage occurring from moisture and to be able to be cleaned using chemicals without damaging the carpet.

Olefin is less durable than nylon and wool and shouldn’t be used for high traffic areas. That being said it is a very affordable option for areas which may be exposed to a significant amount of moisture or may experience greater chances of staining.

P.E.T. Polyester

P.E.T. Polyester is recycled polyester carpet. It is the inexpensive alternative of wool if you’re looking for environmentally friendly carpeting. P.E.T. Polyester is stronger than olefin and when properly maintained it can perform as well as nylon carpeting at a much more affordable cost. PET polyester fibre is a recent invention, made from recycled materials such as plastic bottles. It is similar to nylon with regards to durability and water resistance. It also has the moisture protection and stain resistance attributes of olefin. P.E.T. Polyester is best utilized for light traffic areas when cost is a concern.

Wool

Wool fibre represents the high end in carpet material. Wool is more expensive than most engineered materials and makes for an excellent carpeting option. Wool is the softest fibre choice of the bunch, it is fire resistant and an ecologically friendly choice. It is ideal for formal living areas in the home.

Wool naturally, is an extremely durable fibre. It will not crush leaving footprints or vacuuming marks. The fibres structure forces debris to the surface making it resistant to excessive wear. The protein contained within wool fibre has excellent flame resistant properties. Also, wool does not conduct static electricity, it repels water and is a renewable resource. Its visual appeal is top tier and its the most stain resistant of carpeting materials.

There are a few disadvantages to wool however. Wool is the most expensive carpeting often costing twice as much as the top of the line alternatives. Also, It requires special cleaning care. Since normal carpet cleaners can permanently damage wool carpeting, special cleaning products specifically designed for wool must be used.
